How to hire a Google Ads consultant in Birmingham

September 18, 2026 · 7 min read

If you're searching for a Google Ads consultant or a Google Ads expert in Birmingham, you're usually in one of two situations: nobody is running the account and it shows, or somebody is running it and you can't tell what you're getting for the money. Both are fixable. The hard part is choosing who fixes them.

Consultant, agency, or in-house — what you're actually choosing

These three options solve different problems, and the cheapest one is only cheap if it matches your situation.

  • A consultant is one experienced person in your account. You get direct access to the decision-maker, fast changes, and honest answers. You do not get a large production team, so big website builds or heavy content programs usually sit outside the engagement.
  • A traditional agency gives you scale and specialists, but often a junior account manager between you and the person touching the account. That's fine at large budgets and frustrating at small ones.
  • An in-house hire makes sense once paid media is a full-time job with enough spend to justify a salary. Below that, you're paying for availability rather than expertise.

Big Bright Lights is founder-led on purpose. Matt Robinson is the person in the account, on the calls, and writing the reporting — with more than a decade managing paid media for businesses and agencies, Google Ads certification, and a leadership role with the American Marketing Association Birmingham chapter.

Why a Birmingham partner sees things a national shop doesn't

Geography is a real competitive variable here. Serving the 280 corridor is not the same as serving Bessemer, and a roofing company willing to drive to Trussville has a different economic picture than one that won't cross Red Mountain. Someone who knows the metro asks about service radius before writing a single ad.

Local also means you can sit across a table. Plenty of good work happens over video — but when a business is deciding where six figures of annual spend goes, being able to meet the person responsible tends to matter.

The questions worth asking before you sign

  • Who is in my account day to day, and can I talk to them directly?
  • Do I own the Google Ads account, the Analytics property, the tag manager container, and the call tracking — under my own login?
  • Is my ad spend billed to my card, or does it pass through your invoice?
  • How is your fee calculated, and does it change if I raise spend?
  • What does month one look like specifically, before results exist?
  • How will we measure a qualified lead, not just a form fill?
  • What's the commitment, and what happens if I want out?

Ask the ownership question first. It's the one that tells you whether leaving later will be a paperwork exercise or a hostage negotiation.

Red flags

  • The account lives under the agency's name and you can't get admin access.
  • Ad spend runs through their card with an undisclosed markup.
  • Guaranteed rankings, guaranteed leads, or a promised cost per lead before anyone has looked at your account.
  • No conversion tracking plan, no call tracking, and no interest in what happens after the form is submitted.
  • Reporting that leads with impressions and clicks and never mentions revenue.
  • A long contract required up front with no audit or trial period.

How we work

We start by looking, not selling. A free, high-level review tells you where the biggest likely leak is and up to three things to do about it. If you want the deep version — full search-term and account analysis, tracking verification, lead-quality review, a landing page look, and a recorded walkthrough — that's the paid audit, and the fee comes off your first month if you engage us afterward.

Ongoing management runs month to month after an initial 90-day commitment, with no cancellation penalties, and you own every account and asset the whole way through. The programs and fees are published on our pricing page — details of Google Ads management are on our Google Ads services page, and more about Matt is on the about page.

The right question isn't 'who's the cheapest?' It's 'who will tell me the truth about my account in the first thirty days?'

Our published programs and one-time project fees are all on the pricing page.
